The short version. Whitespace is free and open source under the MIT License. Use it, fork it, build on it. It's provided as-is with no warranty. You're responsible for the content you create, the code you choose to run, and any AI provider you connect.

By downloading or using the Whitespace application or this website, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

1. The software is open source

Whitespace is licensed under the MIT License (Copyright © 2026 Zach Powers). Your rights to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software are governed by that license, available in the project repository. Nothing here is intended to limit the rights the MIT License grants you.

2. Acceptable use

You agree to use Whitespace lawfully. You are solely responsible for the boards, drawings, files, and other content you create or import, and for ensuring you have the rights to use them. Don't use the software to infringe others' rights or to do anything illegal.

3. Code execution

Whitespace can run code that you place in cells or that you choose to execute, using interpreters installed on your own machine. This code runs with your user privileges. You are responsible for what you run — only run code you understand and trust, especially in boards you received from someone else. You use this capability at your own risk.

4. AI features (bring-your-own-key)

The AI assistant requires an API key from a third-party provider that you supply. When you use it, your data is sent to your chosen provider under that provider's terms, and you are responsible for your API keys, your usage, and any charges the provider bills you. AI output may be inaccurate or incomplete — review it before relying on it. We make no guarantee about AI-generated content.

5. Third-party services

Whitespace interoperates with independent services — your AI provider, GitHub (for downloads and updates), and others. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms, and we are not responsible for them.

6. No warranty

THE SOFTWARE AND WEBSITE ARE PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the software will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that it will not lose data — keep backups of anything important.

7. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES, OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF, OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

8. Trademarks

Whitespace is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Excalidraw. It is independently built and interoperable with the .excalidraw file format. Other names and marks are the property of their respective owners.

9. Changes

We may update these terms as the product evolves. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms, which will carry a new "Last updated" date.
